The project for our latest camping trip was the construction of
a monkey bridge as described by Bill Hillcourt, the BSA National Director
of Scoutcraft in an old article from Boys Life.
It was one of those projects that needed the involvement of a number of
scouts all working together in a coordinated manner toward a common goal.
Two teams lashed together the supporting spars, while another team laid out
the rops and attached the stringers to the footrope and hand rails. A fourth
team put the anchoring into the ground. Then the teams got together to
assemble all the pieces and we had our bridge.
After a small incident when the ground stakes came out of the ground we
were ready to test the structure. The lads crossed the bridge. Once again
the scouts demonstrated the power of working together and successfully
accomplishing a complex project. They certainly should be proud of what
they did.
Next, we hope to assemble this bridge at the Takoma Jazz and Folk Festival
and perhaps even at the Scouting on the National Mall in DC. Let's show
them our stuff.
